A perfectly functioning tiny 1×2 HDMI splitter which is powered from the TV’s USB port for £14.99 from Amazon (affiliate link*).

Take a look inside the back of my custom made TV cupboard and it looks a little busy – Wires everywhere and just about everything has it’s own power supply:

So I was quite pleased when I wanted to get an HDMI splitter and found this one on Amazon (affiliate link*) which is powered by USB – meaning I could just plug it into one of the USB ports on my LG TV.

An HDMI splitter is a pretty basic device which lets you take one HDMI signal and duplicates it to two outputs. The two outputs appear to be identical in my laymans test of just pluging it into two tellys and looking at the screens!

Here’s a little video showing the splitter in operation.

One thing I did discover is that although the instruction leaflet that came with it says it supports CEC I could not get it to work with my Raspberry Pi running Kodi. HDMI CEC is where your TV remote can control a device connected via HDMI as long as the device supports it. I checked with my Pi connected directly to the TV to confirm CEC was working but when I connected via the splitter (and rebooted the Pi) it did not work. I will contact the supplier to see if they can offer any suggestion or clarification on whether it does actually support HDMI CEC and update this post accordingly.
